Why are they your favourites? You probably didn’t say some run-of-the-mill backbencher or talk about policy detail. I would venture to guess it was instead someone who commands a room and does the unexpected, or a speech that showed character and emotion, that made you feel understood . Yes, we want our politicians to be implementing policies that we agree with and fighting for issues we support, but more than that, we want authenticity; we want them to be human. Populism is a political style that has recently experienced a significant rise, a style that, some may say, is being rapidly adopted by the right-wing and to great effect—but what is it? You may quote tutors or look back in your lecture slides to find a description of populist politicians as being those who separate society into two groups: the good and the bad, and many dictionaries would agree with you. But again, I ask you, what does that mean? Are there many politicians you can think of who don’t advocate for their ‘good’ policies and degrade their opponents ‘bad’ ones? If you were arguing with someone on matters of politics, would you not instinctively feel that they are one of the ‘bad’ ones? But we’re talking about much more than a simplistic choice between their bad and your good . Populism isn’t just a political buzzword that can be thrown around this easily; there is no way it could have become so mainstream if that is all it is… right? Populism, for all intents and purposes, could be without meaning. In the same way that if you asked a conservative politician if they are aware of and attentive to important societal issues, they would (hopefully) say yes, but under no circumstances would they call themselves ‘woke’.
