Jon Ossoff secured a promise from Army leaders to fix privatized military housing and hold contractors responsible during a Thursday hearing. The Georgia senator voiced worries about ongoing issues at Fort Gordon and other bases nationwide. Ossoff met with Lt. Gen. Michelle Donahue at the hearing. They discussed funding for military construction projects. He chairs the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction as ranking member. The senator brought up an eight-month bipartisan probe into privatized housing at Fort Gordon. It uncovered "shocking testimony from service members whose families had their health impacted in serious ways." "We continue to hear troubling stories and reports from service members at installations across Georgia, across the South, across the country, about poor conditions and privatized housing, inadequate support from housing providers on installations in Georgia and nationwide, some of these abusive non-disclosure provisions that families are forced into," Ossoff said, per WRDW . The worries persist. This happens despite added funding for expanded oversight, tenant support, and maintenance. Ossoff asked Donahue what the Army was doing to protect families from mistreatment by housing providers. Donahue committed to keep working with the senator and the subcommittee to address service members' concerns. Ossoff led a probe in 2022 that exposed problems with privatized military housing at the installation. The U.S. Army then conducted unit-by-unit inspections of housing on military bases, starting at the Georgia site. Privatized family housing at the installation has suffered from fungus to leaks of raw sewage. News 12 investigations spanning more than ten years have exposed these issues. The problems have caused health issues in children and adults living in the housing run by the contractor.
