According to a Reuters report, the expiration follows a month-long temporary extension originally implemented to ease global oil supply shortages and mitigate soaring energy prices caused by Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had previously stated he would not renew the general license authorizing the purchase of Russian oil stored on tankers. As of Saturday afternoon in Washington, no renewal notice had been posted to the Treasury Department’s official website, and a Treasury spokesperson declined to offer further comment.
