AN ACT
1 Amending Title 75 (Vehicles) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated
2 Statutes, in other required equipment, further providing for
3 general requirements for school buses; and, in size, weight
4 and load, further providing for width of vehicles.
5 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
6 hereby enacts as follows:
7 Section 1. Section 4552 of Title 75 of the Pennsylvania
8 Consolidated Statutes is amended by adding a subsection to read:
9 § 4552. General requirements for school buses.

11 (b.4) Extended stop signal arms.--
12 (1) A school bus may be equipped with an extension to a
13 side stop signal arm that partially obstructs the roadway. A
14 maximum of two extensions to a side stop signal arm may be
15 equipped on the left side of the vehicle.
16 (2) An extension to a side stop signal arm shall comply
17 with the following specifications:
18 (i) The extension shall be equipped with a system of
19 flashing red lights.
1 (ii) The front side of the extension shall extend no
2 more than 78 inches, measured from the left side of the
3 vehicle to the furthest part of the extension to the side
4 stop signal arm, and at a height no less than 36 inches
5 from the ground.
6 (iii) The rear side of the extension shall extend no
7 more than 32 inches, measured from the left side of the
8 vehicle to the furthest part of the extension to the side
9 stop signal arm, and at a height no less than 36 inches
10 from the ground.
11 (3) The department shall promulgate regulations to
12 implement this subsection.

14 Section 2. Section 4921(e.1) of Title 75 is amended to read:
15 § 4921. Width of vehicles.

17 (e.1) School buses.--School bus side stop signal arms and
18 extended stop signal arms, as provided for in section 4552
19 (relating to general requirements for school buses), may, when
20 in an extended position displaying red visual signals while the
21 vehicle is stopped and loading or discharging students, extend
22 beyond the width limitation otherwise provided in this section.

24 Section 3. This act shall take effect in 60 days.
