/ Direct Loan Program Student Loan Terms and Conditions: The William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) program is the single largest source of federal financial assistance to support students’ postsecondary educational pursuits. As of September 30, 2024, $1.7 trillion owed by 40.5 million borrowers was outstanding. The terms and conditions of loans made under the program are voluminous and complex. The tabulations in this infographic are intended to illustrate, in a generalized manner, the numerous terms and conditions available on a Direct Loan. Availability and utilization of a specific loan term or condition may depend on individual loan types and borrower circumstances. Notes: This infographic depicts the count of terms and conditions for a Direct Loan program loan made in award year 2024-2025 to a borrower who has no outstanding federal student loan debt, as specified in relevant statutes, regulations, and Department of Education guidance.
